Teaching Matters

NZEI network for Primary teachers

So how are they going down at your school?
I heard teachers saying that they are still to open their package of information. Have you? How do you think they work along side the new curriculum? I work shopped the key competencies this week... these are so exciting. So much a part of creating a thinking, inquiry driven learning environment. The national standards seem detract from this path. What do you think ?

Hi Viv

Yes I have the " package " . Being a classroom teacher in a specialist school , I am in a different kettle of fish again with such a range of students across different learning levels . The IEP process with a narrative assessment approach which focuses on each students strenghts rather than what they cant achieve needs to be combined with the NS 's in my classroom The NS's completely put our recently released and revamped curricula on the back burner . Teachers will teach to the standard rather than empowering and extending students knowledge across a range of learning areas and experiences . However in saying all this I know the NAGS have been changed , the BOT trustees association are following the governments policy so do we have a choice . The national standards must be " tested " in some form - how do we know those progressions are even accurate - remember the lessons learnt from the NECA ?? - if those tiers are not accurate then you are actually failing more students which is what has happened internationally But is tolley listening ???
