What is Parity? What is entrenchment?

Parity: Kindergarten, primary and secondary kaiako in Aotearoa all have the same basic pay scale. It is based on qualifications and years of experience. Kaiako start on a step on the pay scale and finish on a set step based on the qualifications they hold. They move through the pay scale one step per year. Because this is the same for all kaiako, we refer to this as parity. In recent years the major political parties have had a policy of parity for kaiako. The challenge we face is gaining parity for kaiako in Kōhanga Reo.

Entrenchment: Entrenchment is a specific entitlement negotiated into the Primary Teachers Collective Agreement (PTCA). NZEI TE RIU ROA negotiated it to ensure that Parity is maintained woth Secondary kaiako. It means that if Secondary kaiako negotiate a pay increase during the term of the PTCA, the pay increase will be offered to Primary kaiako also. The entrenchment provisions expire with the collective agreement so need to be re-negotiated each time we negotiate.

Tēnā koutou katoa,
Koina te patai nunui! What are we prepared to do?
It was debated at Te Ngaio Tū Hui a rohe Whanui - that "our tamariki and whānau should not be adversely affected by our actions" - however "WE" need to actively inform our whānau of the issues and have them stand next to US - especially if striking is the action.
Someone else also suggested to stand up for learning by having all schools not sending their data to ministry - instead line the roads and rip those reports up - all at the same designated time.
Naku iti noa...
