jan Lee education forum

Otago Branch held an education forum in Dunedin and we attracted about 60 people.  We were thrilled with the outcome and the lively debate during our open session of questions.  I think some MPs were surprised at the negative response to National Standards by teachers.  Attending the forum were 2 Labour, 2 National, 2 Mana and 2 Greens, we were pleased with the response.

My Year 3 class are working on the elections in our class, amazing when you use the staff at school and split…

Joanne Christie Collyer World Teachers' Day Saturday 29th October Town Basin Whangarei

While the weather was less than 'the winterless north' at first, a great day was had by all.  Thanks to Frances Nelson for speaking.  You are an inspiration!  It was also great to hear from the Support Staff team, lead by Dianna Boyle. Thanks must also go to Julie Findlay for her ECE input.  Then there were wonderful performances by children from Manaia View School, Saint Francis Xavier Catholic School, Hora Hora School, Kamo Intermediate and Wellsford School. What class acts!  Children were so… Continue

Joanne Christie Collyer Primary Cluster meetings

Whangarei branch hosted three cluster meetings.  Unfortunately attendance was low, however we had good discussion about the remuneration and recognition report.  The principles helped us focus on what we consider to be important. Concerns about the lack of career pathways and the governments refusal to accept the Practice Based Attestation model were food for thought.  However as we lead up to our collective agreement negotiations next year, I hope more teachers share their opinions on the way… Continue

Katrina Alexander 100 000 Conversations

Here's a good idea to use at your branch activities to get those conversations moving ahead....it was given to us at our AC meeting so can't take the credit for it but it is a goody....

Buy a pack of cards for the game 500, this gives you cards with 12, 13, 14 ect... Shuffle them and get your members to pick one. That is how many conversations they need to have in a week.( You can make up your own rules for Jack's and ace ) Have one there and then with the person they are…

niki penny how should we measure wealth in NZ?

http://www.nzinstitute.org/index.php/nzahead/ is a link  (sent to me by Dave Kennedy) to website that gives New Zeland ratings  for wealth in a range of things including education. These ratings are based on actual OECD information and not just GDP.  Make sure you click on the "more" links to get the background. It makes for interesting reading.

Joanne Christie Collyer National Standards Weather report follow-up

Whangarei branch looked at the National Standards Weather Report findings at our branch meeting on Monday 9th May. After initial concerns that not many schools had filled out the questionnaire on surveymonkey, it became clear that more had, but are not represented on the spreadsheet, so that was good to know.  We viewed the powerpoint presentation and talked about the importance of having conversations with as many people as we can.  REMEMBER IF 50, 000 MEMBERS SPEAK TO TWO PEOPLE EACH THEN… Continue

Chris Walker What are Charter Schools and do we want this type of reform in NZ?

The American movie Waiting for Superman has been doing the rounds on the NZ film festival circuit prompting comment and coverage about the need to implement similar educational reform here. The film champions Charter Schools, an initiative that establishes publically funded schools with significant autonomy from the exisiting public system.

The arguments behind the initiative are compelling - Charter Schools will result in innovations in schooling, greater efficiency, higher levels…

Viv Goldsmith Which one doesn't need to be trained?

Sometimes we need to put cuts into context. Here's a story...

So out in this centre is four staff. One is outside looking after a group of students exploring and learning on the equipment out there. He's helping them develop gross motor skills and exploring what happens to water in sand.

By the water trough is another teacher talking about floating and sinking, heavy and light. Chatting about why the water wheel turns like so.

In the library, there is a group…
