NZEI has uncovered a case of
an education worker being sacked under the 90 Day
Bill.
This is her
story.
When Sarah* was persuaded by
an ECE employer to turn down another job in favour of their centre, she
could not foresee that within weeks she’d be fired under the Government’s
90 Day 'Fire at Will' trial law.
Sarah is a qualified ECE teacher
with 11 years experience. Six weeks into the new job, she was informed
there had been a complaint about her. Within 24 hours, she was fired. No
previous concerns had been raised, and she was given no chance to hear the
complaint or respond to it.
It really knocked my confidence in
myself as a professional,” Sarah says.
"Perhaps the fact that it
was around the time the Government cut funding for 100% qualified teachers
had something to do with it,” she says. "But it’s a terrible, unfair thing
to do to anyone to deny them the right to put their side of the story. I
want other NZEI members to know that it could happen to you, your
colleagues, your family members - anyone!”
